In 1971, a dedicated group of volunteers joined with the Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and recognized the need for an organized way to provide homes for those most in need. They reached out to civic and business leaders and communities of faith that shared their goals. By the end of the decade, CommonBond Communities had become a separate nonprofit corporation.

CommonBond Communities became a pioneer in producing and preserving affordable housing with services, pursuing its mission with a results-oriented approach. Thirty-six years later, CommonBond is the largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing in the Upper Midwest, developing rental housing communities located in cities throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
